Dr. Davydov is a Soviet and Russian scientist, oncological surgeon, Director of the N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Oncology Center (until 2017), Academician (since 2004) and President (in 2006–2011) of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (since 2003).
Dr. Davydov is a laureate of the State Award of the Russian Federation for science and technology (2001), Meritorious Scientist of the Russian Federation. He is the Chief Oncologist at the medical center of the Department of Presidential Affairs, head of the Oncology Department at the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Ministry of Health of Russia; member of the European and American Societies of Surgery, International Society of Surgery.
In 1975, Dr. Davydov graduated from the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University where he also worked as a lab technician at the Department of Operative Surgery (1971–1973). He completed his residency (1975–1977) and PhD program (1977–1980) at the N.N. Blokhin Oncological Scientific Center. He defended his PhD thesis (“Combination resections and gastrectomies in cancer of the proximal stomach”) and DSc thesis (“Single-step operations in combination and surgical treatment of esophageal cancer”), received the title of Professor. In 1986, Dr. Davydov became a leading researcher at the Thoracic Department; in 1992, he became the head of the N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Oncology Center; in.
In 2003, Dr. Davydov became the member of the Russian Academy of Sciences; in 2004 – the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. In 2006, he was elected the President of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. He served as the President until March 1st, 2011.
Dr. Davydov’s scientific and practical work consists of development of new and improvement of existing methods of surgical treatment of lung, esophagus, stomach and mediastinum tumors. He developed a completely new method of intrapleural stomach-esophageal and esophagus-intestinal anastomoses characterized by originality of technical execution, safety and high physiological compliance. Using mediastinal and retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, he improved the results of treatment of esophageal, lung and stomach cancers. Dr. Davydov was the first oncological surgeon to perform operations with plastic surgery of the vena cava, pulmonary artery, aorta. He developed a method of combination resection of the esophagus and plastic surgery of the trachea for treatment of esophageal cancer complicated by tracheoesophageal fistula.
Dr. Davydov is a member of the International Consortium on Research of Lung and Kidney Cancers, Tumors of the Upper Respiratory and Digestive Organs and International Consortium on Research of Malignant Tumors’ Genome.
Dr. Davydov had supervised 70 DSc theses and 100 PhD theses.
He has authored more than 300 scientific publications including 3 monographs and 6 methodological movies.
