MD, DSc, Professor, leading researcher at the Laboratory of Viral Carcinogenesis, N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Oncology Center, Ministry of Health of Russia; Meritorious Scientist of the Russian Federation.
In 1965, Dr. Gurtsevich received a doctor’s diploma from the I.I. Mechnikov Leningrad Sanitation and Hygiene Medical Institute.
In 1967–1969, he was a PhD student at the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Oncology, Academy of Medical Sciences.
In 1970, he successfully defended his PhD thesis.
In 1976–1978, he worked as a scientific consultant on viral research at the Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology (Havana, Cuba).
In 1983–1988, he was a researcher at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) (Lyon, France).
In 1994–1999, he was a member of the expert committee on biological and pharmacological sciences of the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles.
In 2000, Dr. Gurtsevich received the title of Professor, in 2004 – the title of Meritorious Scientist of the Russian Federation.
In 2005–2008, he represented Russia at the Consultation Counsel of the European Association of Cancer Research (EACR).
In 1988–2017, he headed the Laboratory of Viral Carcinogenesis at the N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Oncology Center. Since 2018, he is a leading researcher at the Laboratory.
Dr. Gurtsevich’s scientific interests include methods of differential diagnosis of cancer of the nasopharynx based in patients’ immune response to proteins of lytic cycle of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV); research on incidence of human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV-1) among Russian and Commonwealth of Independent States’ populations; research on characteristics of functioning of various Epstein-Barr virus genes associated with malignant transformation in such pathologies as nasopharyngeal and stomach cancers, Hodgkin’s lymphoma and others.
Dr. Gurtsevich has authored more than 200 publications in Russian and international journals, supervised 10 DSc and PhD theses.
